Chapter 7 bankruptcy - explained

Chapter 7 is also called “liquidation”, “straight bankruptcy,” or "debt liquidation" because as a debtor, your assets are sold, creditors receive payment, and you're freed from your debts. Although it's a quick and simple form of declaring bankruptcy, there are still many factors to be considered.

Not everyone can qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy; you must first pass a means test. This has been implemented to prevent people with the ability to pay their debts from getting those debts discharged. For those who do not qualify for Chapter 7, Chapter 13 bankruptcy is an alternative.
